copies of Superman #1 in the marketplace. This week, we continue our look at key
comics by looking at the CGC Census numbers for the Golden Age milestone book
Action Comics #1.
The most recent CGC Census notes only 28 copies
total with 18 unrestored copies, one qualified, and nine restored copies. Of the
nine restored copies, one has extensive amateur restoration, one extensive
professional, four moderate professional, three slight professional. While the
print run and survival rate were small, given today’s interest in collectibles
it is possible that a few additional copies may surface. While no recent
high-grade discoveries have been found, there are an estimated 100 total copies
in existence, which includes the 28 slabbed books. We’re hopeful that there may
still be some new finds in the woodwork.
Superman was created by Jerry
Siegel and Joe Shuster and after several unsuccessful attempts he debuted in
Action Comics #1 June of 1938. The print run for this landmark comic book
was 200,00 copies with 130,00 copies distributed and sold. The remaining 70,000
copies were returned and destroyed. The introduction of the man of steel created
the gateway for the comic book magazine format to experience unprecedented
growth and interest that has lasted over 67 years.
