Maya Lopez, aka Echo, is a very talented woman with amazing athletic abilities, martial arts and acrobatic skills, photographic reflexes, as well as being a concert level pianist and ballet dancer. A creation of writer David Mack and artist Joe Quesada, Maya was introduced in Daredevil #9 (December 1999). She is a member of the Cheyenne people, and one of the few deaf comic characters.

Kingpin killed her father, then raised her as his own, molding her into the weapon, Echo. Once she learned that he was responsible for her father’s death, Echo shot Kingpin and sought help from a Chief to reconcile with the things she had done for Kingpin and find a new path.

She resurfaced 20 years ago in New Avengers #11 (November 2005), concealing her identity behind a mask and her gender through strategically designed suit. At that time, Maya wanted to stop villains but didn’t want to work with the New Avengers because she felt that her past would sully their reputations as heroes. Instead, she chose to be a lone warrior, taking on the name, Ronin.

Daredevil convinced her to join Captain America to defeat the Silver Samurai in Japan. While there, Ronin investigated Elektra Natchios to find out if she was leading the Hand, and try to find a solution to the conflict between the Hand and Clan Yashida. She fought Elektra and was killed in the battle, but soon the Hand resurrected her with the plan to turn her into an assassin in their employ.

Luke Cage, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and others came to her rescue, and Elektra sent the Hand after them in retaliation. During the ensuing fight it was revealed that the Hand had brainwashed Maya and she stabbed Doctor Strange with a sword that the Hand gave to her. When she turns on the New Avengers, Doctor Strange uses astral projection to free Maya of the brainwashing. Enraged by being controlled, the freed Maya stabbed Elektra and revealed that she was actually a Skrull in disguise.

The team returned to Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum and Maya chose to give up the name Ronin, passing the identity on to Clint Barton.
