The Commonwealth’s head guard is on duty. The Walking Dead has cast Michael James Shaw as Mercer for the 11th and final season of the AMC series.

Shaw has had several action and/or authoritarian roles in his career. He played Corvus Glaive in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Agent Mike in Limitless, Papa Midnite on Constantine, and most recently he starred in the show Blood & Treasure.

Mercer is one of the main characters introduced at the Commonwealth, which is a community based in Ohio that has done more to return life to normal than any other group we’ve seen so far. It’s run by a woman named Pamela Milton and overseen by a police force dressed in attention-getting white armor.

Mercer is the chief officer of the community’s guards who is given the distinction of wearing red armor. He also serves as the personal bodyguard for Pamela and her son.

In season 10 Eugene began communicating with Stephanie, a woman from the Commonwealth, who invites him to come see their community. Eugene, Ezekial, Yumiko, and new character Princess arrived at their meeting spot to be greeted by the Commonwealth’s armored guards rather than Stephanie.

The Walking Dead is currently running six bonus episodes for season 10, but it’s unclear if Mercer will be introduced in those episodes or in season 11.
