Universal Monsters: The Mummy #4
Image; $4.99
In the last issue of The Mummy, Helen learned that the voice in her head is that of Ankh-es-en-amun, the former priestess of Isis who has since been reborn several times inside the body of another woman. Much to Helen’s dismay, the voice she thought was her friend is trying to take over her body to reunite with her beloved, Imhotep.
The final issue of the miniseries follows Helen’s attempts to escape the tomb she was buried in and reclaim her body before it’s too late. As she’s doing that, Ankh-es-en-amun learns what Imhotep is planning for their future together.
As the writer and illustrator on the book, Faith Erin Hicks did a good job of recreating Universal’s classic The Mummy film. It follows the storyline that captivating moviegoers in 1932 (and well beyond) but also infused it with some subtle updates for a modern audience. It has the infatuation and suspense that permeate the original with a fight for survival and justice. Image/Skybound are doing a very good job with the Universal Monster books.
