He’s often regarded as an almost mythical icon of Americana, but believe it
or not, Uncle Sam was actually a real person. His name was Samuel Wilson, and he
was an inspector of war goods during the War of 1812. Once the goods passed by
him, he stamped them with the contactor’s name and a “U.S.” for United States.
Samuel jokingly said the initials “U.S.” stood for Uncle Sam, and thus the
legend grew. Everywhere in the world, the term Uncle Sam is synonymous with the
United States. And for fans of the classic American toy Mr. Potato Head, here’s
a patriotic Uncle Sam Potato that comes complete with a star and stripes hat and
red bow tie.
