Uderzo Art Headlines Heritage’s International Comic Art Auction
Heritage’s International Comic Art Signature Auction presents works from around the world by creators like Jean “Moebius” Giraud, Gene Colan, Boris Vallejo, and many others. Leading the charge for the auction on April 18-19, 2026, is an Astérix and Obélix cover by co-creator Albert Uderzo.
The cover shows the marble profile of Julius Caesar in sculptural tones, with Astérix and Obélix appearing in vibrant comic book colors on the right. The series co-created with writer René Goscinny debuted in 1959, and has consistently been one of the best selling comics around the world. Despite its global reach, few of Uderzo’s cover paintings have been offered at auction.

“As is its tradition, this Signature sale presents the world’s most distinguished selection, bringing together the finest examples of American comic art, Franco-Belgian masterpieces, international works and Manga,” Heritage’s Director of International Comic Art and Anime Olivier Delflas said. “Yet this edition transcends expectations with an Uderzo color Astérix painting – a landmark debut for Heritage Auctions.”
The auction also contains Uderzo’s Astérix Chez Les Helvétes #16 story page 2 with a comedic scene that gathers a parade of the Gaulish village. Uderzo’s De Ruige Ridder, De Verwenste – Baron – Belloy, Le Baron Maudit story pages showcase his expressive line work and gothic atmosphere.
Moebius is also well represented with art from Silver Surfer, The Airtight Garage, The Snake Woman, and Blueberry. Frank Frazetta’s first Johnny Comet Sunday comic strip art from February 2, 1952, features a roadside gas station on a dark and stormy night.

The slate of American artists are represented by Gene Colan, John Romita Sr., John Romita Jr., Bill Sienkiewicz, and Jack Kirby. Colan’s work includes a Daredevil #68 splash page, Daredevil #20 and #60 story pages, and Sub-Mariner #43 story page. Romita Sr.’s Captain America #140 cover showcases the Gargoyle, and Romita Jr.’s The Amazing Spider-Man #503 cover presents Spidey and captured criminals. Kirby’s Fantastic Four #73 page follows the Silver Surfer across every panel.
The international section highlights the talents of Boris Vallejo, Manuel Sanjulian, Simone Bianchi, Gabriele Dell’Otto, and Milo Manara. The auction offers works from Underground Comix with The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 10 cover and a Weirdo #7 story page by Robert Crumb. Additionally, Heritage is presenting manga art topped by a Moonlight Mask color page by Jiro Kuwata and works by Osamu Tezuka.
