The Autobots and Decepticons are ready for battle in Hake’s Auction #238. The Transformers animated series and toy line was a popular hit in the 1980s, and with multiple other movies, shows, and toy lines under its belt, the series has continued to be popular for decades. For collectors, it all goes back to those ‘80s toys, and some of the earliest pieces and rarities are now open for bids in Hake’s premier auction.

The Transformers Series 1 Optimus Prime AFA 80 (error box/light blue trailer) is leading the charge. This figure of the Autobot Commander is in the rare trademark logo box (which is rarer than the registered logo) and is also known as an “error” box. That pertains to the overprint of a small portion of the radar dish from Optimus Prime’s trailer headquarters as seen on the bottom panel of the box. Other box differences include the lack of white border around the three inset photo images of the toy on the front of the box. The toy itself also has a recognizable difference as the trailer’s stabilizer legs are made of a lighter blue plastic than later releases.

A Series 1 Optimus Prime AFA 80 (trademark logo) is also offered in the auction. Among the most desirable Transformers Series 1 toys, it is the rarer version with the trademark logo versus the registered logo. It is extremely difficult to find in the original factory sealed state.

A Series 1 Soundwave AFA 80+ (trademark logo/no rubsign) leads the fight for the Autobots’ enemies. The Decepticon Communicator Soundwave and Condor cassette Buzzsaw toy has the trademark logo and is a pre-rub version with no rubsign.

High value Transformers lots include a Series 1 Megatron AFA 80 with rubsign of the Decepticon leader, which is among the most desirable toys from the first series. The Series 2 Jetfire AFA 80+ (trademark logo) of the Autobot Air Guardian uses a Super Valkyrie mecha design from the anime series Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. There’s also a Series 2 Dinobot – Grimlock AFA 80, which is a very desirable Series 2 toy; and the Series 2 Constructicon Giftset – Devastator AFA 80 featuring Bonecrusher, Scavengers, Scrapper, Hook, Long Haul, and Mixmaster.

Additional Transformers auction highlights are the Series 1 Optimus Prime AFA 80 (metal plates), Series 1 Car – Ratchet AFA 85 (no rubsign/has red cross), Series 1 Jet – Skywarp AFA 80+ (trademark logo/no rubsign/dark gray border), and Series 3 Ultra Magnus AFA 85 (rubber tires, painted face).

The Transformers toys are among the 1,930 lots of pop culture and Americana collectibles in Hake’s Auction #238. Bidding is open at hakes.com now through Tuesday and Wednesday, July 25-26, 2023.
