Ichabod Crane may have stopped the Headless Horseman, but the evil spirit is returning for another round of murder and decapitation. Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow movie is getting a sequel in comic book form, courtesy of IDW’s horror imprint IDW Dark. Entertainment Weekly was given the first look at Return to Sleepy Hollow, which is set 15 years after the events of the movie.

Released in 1999 and directed by Burton, the Sleepy Hollow movie was loosely based on Washington Irving’s story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” It starred Johnny Depp as constable Ichabod Crane who travels to the small town in upstate New York to investigate a series of decapitations. He discovers that the Headless Horsemen is the culprit and has been acting under the orders of Lady Van Tassel who is engaging in a revenge plot.

Return to Sleepy Hollow will be written by Casey Gilly (Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics) and illustrated by new artist Savanna Mayer. It reintroduces Ichabod as a man who travels around the world debunking occult claims. He receives a letter requesting that he return to Sleepy Hollow to investigate strange murders, where he also reconnects with Katrina. “Together, they will uncover the truth of Sleepy Hollow’s origins and the roots that connect them all,” per the description.

“I’ve always had a fascination with spiritualism, early Victorian funeral practices, and folklore, so combining them together in the world of Sleepy Hollow has made my elder goth heart so full. It’s been delightful to create scripts for Savanna and to see their elegant, refined, and beautifully gory art make the book come alive. They are truly a talent to keep your eye on,” Gilly told Entertainment Weekly.

Return to Sleepy Hollow will feature covers by Francesco Francavilla, Joëlle Jones, Audrey Estok, Abigail Larson, and Louie de Martinis. The first issue arrives in time for Halloween on October 29, 2025.
