Thunderbolts Opens with $162M at the Global Box Office

They might not be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but the Thunderbolts* saved the day at the box office. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure rose to a domestic total of $76 million, with an additional $86.1 million internationally, for a global total of $162.1 million.

Thunderbolts* follows a group of antiheroes, former villains, screwups, and misfits who come together to stop a terrible threat from wiping out humanity. The team is made up of characters introduced in other MCU movies and shows, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ava Starr/Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), and Antonia Drekykov/Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).

After trying to kill each other, the group come together when Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) tries to turn Robert Reynolds (Lewis Pullman) into her own superhero, Sentry, with the unexpected consequence of creating the Void. Not only does the Jake Schreier-directed film cover the big budget action of a superhero movie, it also explores the effects of mental illness.

Thunderbolts* has received positive reviews from critics and movie goers, alike. At press time, the movie had a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, making it one of the highest rated movies in the MCU. It had the eighth highest domestic opening of 2025.
