Ever wish your things didn’t take up so much space in your house?
Technology already allows us to compress computer files. Imagine if you could
compress your belongings, too! Uncle Scrooge #340, a $6.95, 64-page
prestige-format softback that shipped last week, presents a Duckburgian look
ahead at this exciting technology. But wait! We say too much, too
soon…

The issue actually gets started with a feature-length Carl Barks
classic, “The Heedless Horseman” (US #65, 1966). When Uncle Scrooge sees
chances to profit by winning the annual Crystal Orb horse race, buying a horse
is his first concern. The ducks meet and purchase Fireball, a superfast steed
who has only one flaw — the tendency to react to loud noises by jumping into
large quantities of water. It wouldn’t be such a problem, except that the
terrible Beagle Boys happen to be doing some blasting!

The Beagles
themselves star in our next story, “Beagle Brain,” written by Pat and Carol
McGreal and drawn by María Nunez. When 176-671 is zapped by Gyro
Gearloose’s new “evo-ray,” his brain evolves — growing smarter and more
sophisticated. In no time he’s hatching the perfect crimes, so his Beagle
brothers decide to make him smarter and smarter still. Alas, they find that too
much brainpower is just as problematic as not enough!

Next on our menu is
“Golden Illusion,” written by Danish fan favorite Gorm Transgaard and drawn by
Vicar. When Donald takes a crack to the head just after seeing a “Robbin Good”
movie, he awakens as the amnesiac “Robin Duck,” would-be swashbuckler of
“Blottingham.” Brave, brave Sir Robin must begin robbing from the rich and
giving to the poor… and whaddaya know, just nearby lies a building laden with
more riches than any tycoon has a right to own. Of course, unknown to our hero,
it’s really his uncle’s money bin!

Launchpad McQuack discovers “The
Hardware Hardener” in a six-page short by Paul Halas and Jack Sutter. After
crashing another of Scrooge’s planes, Launchpad is told he’ll have to use his
own if he’s going to work for Scrooge again. From Gyro, Launchpad acquires a
special spray that can make planes indestructible. But hmm… Launchpad flying
an indestructible plane might be even more trouble than Launchpad flying a
normal plane!

Last on the menu is our piece de resistance, as Pat
and Carol McGreal return for “Jumbled Ducks.” The Mark One Super Matter
Compactor turns three bags of money into one for easy storage; then back to
three for later use. But when Donald’s nephews accidentally hide inside the Mark
One, they’re compressed into one duck with three personalities. And in trying to
rescue them, Scrooge, Donald, and Gyro are themselves compacted into a
three-headed freep!
