This isn’t one of Agent Mulder’s conspiracy theories and skeptical Scully isn’t scowling behind him. Earlier this week Fox confirmed the rumor that they are seriously considering a reboot of The X-Files and are working on reviving the show.

Fox chairpersons and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman have been working with The X-Files creator Chris Carter about bringing the sci-fi procedural drama back. “It’s true that we’ve had some conversations on The X-Files,” Newman told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re hopeful of being able to bring that back at some point.”

Walden added, “Gary and I both worked [at 20th Century Fox Television] through the entire run of The X-Files. It was a great experience. We’ve maintained good relationships with Chris, David, and Gillian. We’re very hopeful, but it’s hard. The actors are very busy. They have a lot going on. Chris has a lot on his plate, so it’s just trying to carve out the time.”

Walden and Newman also commented that they hope to bring back David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, the original stars of the show that ran from 1993 to 2002. Carter had a post-apocalyptic series called The After planned but it was declined by Amazon. Anderson currently has a recurring role on NBC’s Hannibal and Duchovny is working on an event series, also for NBC. Both actors would have to finish these commitments before The X-Files revival could get started.

On Tuesday Duchovny stated that he’s interested in returning for the show. He told USA Today that he is “more than happy and excited to bring it back and do it again with Gillian and Chris.” Apparently Anderson also wants to believe in reviving the show. During a Nerdist podcast Anderson told Chris Hardwick that she misses the show and that if Fox made a plan to reunite her with Duchovny for the show, then she’d be on board.

Fox may bring Prison Break back as well and possibly create another edition of 24.
