The Patriotic Hero Liberty Belle
Liberty Belle is a superhero identity that has been used by two DC characters and one at Charlton Comics. Libby Lawrence was the first hero to use the moniker; she was introduced in Boy Commandos #1 (December 1942). The character was created by Don Cameron and Chuck Winter, who gave her enhanced strength, speed, and stamina when Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell was rung. She had a friend named Tom Revere who was a Liberty Bell guard, and when she signaled to him, he’d ring the bell to activate her powers.
Libby is a descendant of Bess Lynn/Miss Liberty, and most of her adventures took place during World War II. She was working as her father’s assistant in Poland when he was killed during a Nazi raid. She started gathering intel while traveling through Nazi occupied Europe, then she swam across the English Channel to bring the information to the Allies. Libby was welcomed back to the US with a parade and a new job as a celebrity radio reporter.

Once Libby unlocked her powers and started operating as a hero, Liberty Belle became a founding member of the All-Star Squadron. Their first mission was to investigate a potential attack on the US by the Axis powers. During their search for enemy attackers, the All-Star Squadron discovered that Per Degaton had captured the Justice Society of America. The All-Star Squadron rescued the JSA and Per Degaton escaped into the future. Their next move was to expand the team with new members and they elected Liberty Belle as their chairperson.
After the war ended, Liberty Belle and teammate Johnny Quick got married, then had their daughter, future hero Jesse Quick. She was absent from comics for years, resurfacing in the 1980s where she was still the leader of the All-Star Squadron. There was a period where she quit being a superhero, but she stepped up to help during Infinite Crisis and Brightest Day.
