The Overstreet Hall of Fame: Walter Simonson
Who are the individuals who have made great contributions to the comic book arts? Who are the writers, artists, editors, publishers and others who have plied their craft in insightful ways? The Overstreet Hall of Fame, which spotlights many such creators and leading figures, is featured in The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics.
While attending the Rhode Island School of Design, writer-artist Walt Simonson created Star Slammers, a different version of which years later would become Marvel Graphic Novel #6 and later a Star Slammers series from Malibu’s Bravura imprint. Between those two periods he established himself as a creative force, chiefly with the award-winning Manhunter back-up feature in Detective Comics, on which he collaborated with writer Archie Goodwin. Following work on DC’s Metal Men and Hercules Unbound and Heavy Metal’s Alien adaptation (again with Goodwin), he made his way to Marvel.
Beginning with Thor #337, Simonson wrote and illustrated a definitive run on the title, eventually ending with Thor #382. Over the years, his other Marvel work included Battlestar Galactica, Star Wars, Fantastic Four, The Avengers, X-Factor (with wife Louise Simonson) and others. At DC, among other work, he provided covers for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World, wrote and illustrated 25 issues of Orion, illustrated Elric: The Making of a Sorcerer, and wrote the Catwoman and The Demon strip in Wednesday Comics.
The most recent inductees into The Overstreet Hall of Fame are featured in The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #43, which is now on sale. Those inducted up to that point are featured in The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics.
And if you’re in Baltimore over the September 7-8, 2013 weekend, he and numerous other members of The Overstreet Hall of Fame will be attending the show.
