The Overstreet Hall of Fame: Bill Finger
Who are the individuals who have made great contributions to the comic book arts? Who are the writers, artists, editors, publishers and others who have plied their craft in insightful ways? The Overstreet Hall of Fame, which spotlights many such creators and leading figures, is featured in The Overstreet Guide To Collecting Comics.
Arguably the non-credited co-creator of Batman with Bob Kane and Green Lantern with Martin Nodell, the prolific Bill Finger also created the Golden Age hero Wildcat with Irwin Hasen. Kane said of Finger that he was a contributing force on Batman right from the beginning. Finger‘s talent wasn’t just found in comics. He also wrote for Hollywood with films and television shows like The Green Slime, Hawaiian Eye and 77 Sunset Strip. Finger also wrote a two-part episode for the live action Batman series from the 1960s. It was called “The Clock King’s Crazy Crimes / The Clock King Gets Crowned.” Finger, who passed away in 1974, was posthumously inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame and the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. In 1985, DC Comics also named Finger as one of the honorees in the company’s 50th anniversary publication Fifty Who Made DC Great. And, to further honor him, Comic-Con International established the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing.
