Tear
’em up and they’re worth more! Quick now, tell me what kind of collectible is
worth more money if it is torn apart than if it’s intact in its original
condition?

Sunday newspaper comic pages. Yep, strange as it may seem,
if you have a nice old Puck section from the mid 1930s, in excellent condition,
just like it existed when it was printed, you can get maybe $20 – $25 for it.
But if you rip it apart into individual pages, and sell the Flash Gordon
pages to a Flash Gordon collector, the Polly and Her Pals
pages to a Polly collector, the paper dolls in Tillie the Toiler
and Toots and Casper to someone who collects paper dolls, the Thimble
Theatre
pages to a Popeye collector and so on. . .you can get at least
double that price!

It’s a little bit like buying a vintage Action
comic book and tearing it apart into individual pages of Superman, Zatara, and
so on…but you’d lose money on that deal!

Original Sunday comic sections
from the ’20s thru the ’50s are the only collectibles I can think of that are
worth more by NOT being in their original intact state. For at least forty years
now, enterprising sellers of comic material have been methodically ripping up
sections into lots of individual pages. After all, how often do you find
complete Sunday sections in nice condition for sale? And in the future, don’t
you know that complete, intact, Sunday sections are going to be worth a lot more
than they are today?

Of course, let us not forget the ad premiums that
were part of the Sunday comic pages. They, too can be worth more when torn into
pieces. Especially ads for character giveaways, like the ones shown.

So,
it is strange but true. Tear ’em up and they’re worth more!
