The Not-So-Puzzling Crimes of Cluemaster
Cluemaster is a DC villain who has been a recurring nemesis of Tim Drake and he is the father of Stephanie Brown, aka Spoiler. He debuted 60 years ago in Detective Comics #351 (May 1966) as a creation of Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino. Cluemaster does not have any superhuman abilities, instead he throws pellets that contain smoke, explosives, gas that incapacitates, and blinding flares.
Arthur Brown was a game show host before he turned to crime, so as Cluemaster he would leave clues to turn his schemes into games. Cluemaster tried to learn Batman’s identity for his first criminal act, but was unsuccessful. Another defeat prompted Cluemaster to join forces with other supervillains who figured that if they worked together, they’d have better luck. Despite working togethering, the Injustice League still got whipped by the Justice League International.

Cluemaster resurfaced when he was released from Blackgate Penitentiary and joined a gang, agreeing to help plan their heists for 10% of what they stole. Their deal ended violently when Cluemaster killed the gang’s leader by suffocating him with a polymer.
During this story arc by Chuck Dixon and Tom Lyle, it was revealed that Arthur had a daughter, though he had no idea. Stephanie was angry at her father for being a criminal and never being around, so she decided to get him caught for his future crimes. She created her own costume, named herself Spoiler, and started leaving clues about Cluemaster’s crimes so that he would get caught.

Robin found out what she was doing and enlisted Spoiler to help him and Batman catch Cluemaster, though the heroes told her not to come to the actual bust. She didn’t listen to them. When Cluemaster tried to steal a giant glass canister filled with money, he captured Stephanie, held a vial of acid over her face, and threatened to disfigure her if Batman didn’t let him go. Batman then revealed that Spoiler was his daughter, shocking Cluemaster and giving Stephanie the opportunity to attack her father. Batman stopped her from killing Arthur and he took him back to Blackgate.
When he escaped prison again, Stephanie used her Spoiler identity to stop his crimes. The satisfaction of preventing his schemes affected Stephanie and she realized that she enjoyed being a hero more than getting revenge. At that point, Cluemaster’s failed career as a criminal inspired his daughter to be a fulltime hero as Spoiler.
