Enchantress was once an artist named June Moon before she became possessed by a powerful magical entity. As the Enchantress, she is a master of spellcasting, reality alteration, and necromancy, she can access the power of other magic users, track magical users, and she has a deep knowledge of the occult. The powerful being was created by Bob Haney and Howard Purcell, who introduced her 60 years ago in Strange Adventures #187 (April 1966).

June Moone was working as a freelance artist when she was invited to a party at a castle. While there, she found a secret chamber that was housing a magical being that gave her the power to fight a dangerous presence. By saying “Enchantress” June was transformed from a normal woman into the costume-wearing black haired Enchantress. In this empowered state, she defeated a minotaur at the castle, then she stopped a monster at Cape Kennedy and a demonic creature that was being controlled by a criminal.

Enchantress soon went from hero to villain when she fought Supergirl while trying to gain unlimited magical power. She became a member of the Forgotten Villains and was part of the supervillain army in the Crisis on Infinite Earths event.

She was recruited to Task Force X, better known as the Suicide Squad, and on the first mission she used an excessive amount of magic to beat Brimstone. That use of power made her more villainous, and as she worked with the Suicide Squad, June’s ability to control Enchantress became weaker. Madame Xanadu figured out that June’s problem was happening because she started using her power before she had learned to properly control it. She also concluded that the only way to prevent the evil from influencing her was to allow her aura to be strengthened.

Xanadu gave June a powerful necklace and gave someone else a ring that would temper Enchantress’ ability to use magic for evil. June learned that the Enchantress persona wasn’t a manifestation of evil, but was actually a separate entity from another dimension that had fused with her. While on a mission to free Nightshade’s home dimension, she discovered that the Incubus, who had taken over the dimension, was the brother of Dzamor, who had merged with June. The Incubus tore Dzamor out of June, and she went back to being a normal person.

Years later, June broke out of a mental health institute during a storm caused by a war in Hell. She refused to join the superheroes in the fight with demons, so Deadman possessed Enchantress to force her to help. Sebastian Faust killed Enchantress as a pure act of evil to restart the fires in Hell.

As a result of the separation, June was left in a semi-catatonic state and was treated in a sanitarium. Faust reunited her with the Enchantress persona, which had survived and had been living as a succubus named Anita Souleata. Their journey has continued, together and separate, as a powerful magical being capable of great destruction and occasionally heroics.
