Among the countless comic books and other pop culture items at Hake’s Auction #213 is a relic of the 1960s. Though it’s small, measuring 3”, the stand out item is a Jimi Hendrix Experience fan club button. The button reads “I am experienced” with the name of the band around the edge. Authentic fan club merchandise has become incredibly scarce, so fans of Hendrix will surely want to pay attention to this auction.

Replicas and reproductions of vintage concert and fan club merchandise have become rather popular over the last few years, with large chain clothing stores such as Forever 21 selling concert shirt designs that date back to the 1960s. Hendrix is a popular artist among these reproductions, along with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Guns n’ Roses, and others.

Collectors, though, are more interested in the authentic, original material. The problem is, it’s becoming harder and harder to find. T-shirts from 40 or 50 years ago are likely to have long worn out, suffered from dry rot, or been thrown away. And buttons, being so small, were easy to lose. So it’s not difficult to imagine that this Jimi Hendrix Experience fan club button (which likely produced in somewhat limited quantities in the first place) may be one of very few surviving copies.

Though the popularity of Hendrix’s music hasn’t dwindled at all since his death, if anything, it’s increased. Fans may be paying more attention to this particular item due to a recently released film. Jimi: All Is By My Side was released in the United Kingdom in August 2014 and starred Andre Benjamin (better known as Andre 3000, one-half of the duo Outkast) in the lead role. The story primarily focused on Jimi’s life in London in the 1960s, shortly before the release of his debut album Are You Experienced.

Jimi: All Is By My Side has seen a very limited United States release, but reviews have been generally favorable overall; the film currently holds a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes.
