The Evolution of Danielle Moonstar’s Powers
Danielle Moonstar – also known as Psyche, Mirage, and Moonstar – is a mutant who originally had the ability to telepathically create illusions based on her opponent’s fears or wishes. Later she gained a larger range of psionic and energy manipulation abilities included manifesting psionic bullets, bolts, bows and arrows, solid objects from psionic energy, and the power to telepathically link to animals. She is often a member of the New Mutants, the X-Men, and multiple other teams.
Danielle, who often goes by “Dani,” debuted in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (October 1982). Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, she is a Cheyenne Native American who grew up in Boulder, Colorado. Dani’s mutation presented during puberty, and she was soon alienated from her community for unintentionally creating telepathic images of people’s worst fears.

She had a vision of her parents being killed by a bear, then they disappeared on a hunting trip. Dani went to live with her grandfather, Black Eagle, who reached out to Professor X and asked him to train her to control her abilities. Before Charles Xavier arrived to meet Dani, Black Eagle was killed by the Hellfire Club, and Dani vowed to take revenge on his murderers. She joined the New Mutants, taking the name Psyche, and defeated Donald Pierce, who was responsible for Black Eagle’s death. After that, she enrolled in Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.
Psyche kept having nightmares about the bear that killed her parents in her vision. Soon she learned that it was an evil magical entity known as the Demon Bear, and it was searching for her. The protective spells that Dani’s grandfather had placed on her was no longer protecting her, and the Demon Bear was able to find her. The New Mutants fought the Demon Bear, and Magik used her Soulsword to cut the magical creature in half. Once it was dispatched, the two halves transformed into Dani’s missing parents, revealing that they had been kidnapped and enslaved by an evil spirit.
The New Mutants traveled to Asgard, where Dani (now going by Mirage) saved and bonded with the winged horse, Brightwind. Without realizing it, she became a Valkyrie when Brightwind chose her as his rider, and she gained the power to see the deaths of others. After they returned to Earth, the New Mutants became rivals with the Hellions, a young mutant team that the White Queen had formed. The rivalry ended when Mirage and Thunderbird, the leader of the Hellions, bonded.

Mirage’s powers were enhanced once again following a battle with the High Evolutionary. She was tossed into a machine that was meant to take mutants powers from them. But, the machine’s powers had been reversed by some of the High Evolutionary’s victims, and instead of stripping her of power, it gave her the ability to make her telepathic visions real.
When Hela began an attempt to take over Asgard, she used magic to gain control over the Valkyries, which included Mirage. It took Asgardian forces and the New Mutants team to stop Hela. Once the battle ended, Mirage decided to stay on Asgard and fully embrace being a Valkyrie. Her decision upset the Cheyenne deity, Hotamitanio, who went to Asgard to take her home to Earth. Mirage was able to convince him to let her stay on Asgard, and she promised to return to her tribe one day.
