Angela Spica is the second character to use the moniker of the Engineer. A version of the character is currently starring in the Superman movie as one of Lex Luthor’s henchmen, but in comics she was a hero and member of the Authority. She was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, who introduced her in The Authority #1 (May 1999).

She grew up in Queens where Angie was obsessed with superheroes and was building circuit boards when she was just a child. Following the first Engineer’s death, his nanotechnology notes arrived on her computer and linked to her human-machine fusion work. Using the innovation, Angie made the radical decision to distil intelligent devices into liquid machinery and replaced her blood with the nanites. Her body became covered in liquid metal which she can use to fly and create weapons, rocket engines, and many other things.

When she started operating as the hero, The Engineer, Jenny Sparks asked her to become a founding member of the Authority. She became close with Captain Atom when he was displaced in the WildStorm Universe and she was tasked with keeping an eye on him. The Engineer used her nanotechnology to disable the fragment of the Void that was in his body and the pair began a relationship.

Unfortunately, the Mark of Void was still in his system, and he was still in touch with the current host of the Void entity. She attacked him, but he disabled her powers, and she was left with no memory. Angie lost her abilities during the World’s End cataclysm, and chose to become an engineer to repair the Authority’s carrier and help the refugees who were living there. She figured out how to regain her powers for small periods of time.
