Did you know that Milton Caniff’s long-running and syndicated comic strip, Terry and the Pirates, made a brief foray into the wide, wide world of radio? Three years after its debut in newspapers, the strip was adapted for the airwaves in 1937.

The cast of characters didn’t stray much from the original print version, which featured soldier Terry Lee, journalist Pat Ryan, interpreter Connie, and ominous enemy, the Dragon Lady. The series followed the adventures of Terry and company during his station in the Far East.

Quite a few actors took a crack at voicing the title character, including Jackie Kelk, Cliff Carpenter, Owen Jordan and Bill Fein. And while the adventures were well-drawn and acted, ratings never picked up the way readership did on the strip, and so Terry and the Pirates, the radio show, was canceled in 1939.
