Tension is High & Fears Are Faced in New Lanterns Trailer
Hal Jordan is far from welcoming in the latest Lanterns trailer from DC and HBO. The new teaser explores the tension between the two protectors of Sector 2814 and the ways that John Stewart has faced his fears in the past.
The trailer opens with Hal (Kyle Chandler) explaining when and how to use the ring… then he uses it inappropriately. After Hal calls John (Aaron Pierre) “Jr.” the younger man counters by implying that Green Lanterns should have to work for the power instead of being chosen. The tension between them extends to a confrontation between Hal, Sheriff Kerry (Kelly Macdonald), and William Macon (Garret Dillahunt).

In voiceover, Hal tells John that he needs to be fearless to be a Green Lantern. What follows are scenes of John in the military and jumping out of an airplane, and Hal in his Green Lantern uniform in space. We see Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner and John tied to a chair as someone aims a device at his head that contains a glowing orange substance. It ends with John claiming that he will get the Green Lantern ring and do it better than his predecessor.
Hal and John will have to set aside their animosity to solve “a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” according to the official synopsis.
The trailer teases the addition of Laura Linney to the cast, though her role is not disclosed. Lanterns will also star Jason Ritter, Nicole Ari Parker, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Sherman Augustus.
Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindeloff (Watchmen), and comics writer Tom King developed the show. They are co-writing and co-executive producing the series, and Mundy is also serving as the showrunner.
Lanterns will begin its eight-episode run on August 16, streaming on HBO Max.
The new trailer can be viewed below. Be advised, it contains adult language.
