One of the many original comic art pieces in Hake’s current auction is a cover from Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #120, published in June of 1969. The art shows Jimmy Olsen himself looking quite shocked as a doctor tends to a fallen Superman. This piece, like much of the Superman-related art during the Silver Age, was drawn by Curt Swan with inks by Neal Adams.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen ran from October 1954 through March 1974 and totaled 163 issues. The Jimmy Olsen character had appeared alongside Clark Kent since Superman #13 in 1941, but it was Jack Larson’s portrayal of the character in the Adventures of Superman television show that popularized the journalist. The Jimmy Olsen-focused series was often more humorous than the other Superman-related comics at the time, and saw him transform into many other characters including Speed Demon, Elastic Lad and Wolf-Man. He also married Supergirl during this run.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen was merged, along with Superman’s Girl Friend Lois Lane, into Superman Family in 1974. More recently, a Jimmy Olsen one-shot was published in December 2008. Bidding on the cover art ends on November 13, 2014.
