Superman / Spider-Man #1
DC & Marvel; $7.99
The Superman / Spider-Man special begins with Doctor Octopus working hard in his lab where he receives an invitation to do a little deadly science with a villain from Superman’s roster of foes. When radioactive material is stolen from a high tech facility, reporter Clark Kent and photographer Peter Parker travel to the facility to get the scoop.
It doesn’t take long for Spider-Sense and Kryptonian intuition to figure out who has recruited Doc Ock. Superman and Spider-Man embark on a mission of “Truth, Justice, and Great Responsibility” (as the issue is titled), to save people who are in danger and thwart the bad guys.
This special written by Mark Waid, illustrated by Jorge Jiménez, and colored by Tomeu Morey is great from start to finish. Jiménez drew so many exciting panels, including an awesome two-page splash for the title page. The art captures iconic Spider-Man and Superman poses/shots from comics and movies, and panels are packed with brave hero action. Morey’s colors accentuate the subtle differences in the red and blue on their costumes, with vibrant colors throughout the rest of the book.
Waid nailed the story, bringing out the best in both wholesome heroes. Superman encourages the younger hero and Spider-Man helps the Man of Steel see things from a different perspective. Together they tackle a serious situation, but do so without excessive grimness or drama. Instead, it’s uplifting.
There are seven backup stories, starting with a good tale by Tom King in which Lois Lane and Mary Jane talk about their lives as superhero love interests. Superboy meets Spider-Man 2099 in a futuristic team-up, Jimmy Olsen gets a job at the Daily Bugle, and there’s a cheeky story by Gail Simone that puts Power Girl and the Punisher together.
The special was well worth the $7.99 cover price.
Fans of this book can read about more Spider-Man and Superman action in our reviews of Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man and DC and Marvel Present: Superman and Spider-Man (Treasury Edition).
