Supergirl Review: How Does She Do It?
Note, there are spoilers ahead for those who haven’t watched Monday’s episode of Supergirl.
After the wonderful sass of last week’s episode, I was really hoping for more this week. That being said, I feel the writers are slowly (so slowly) starting to find their way with this show. If they would only leave lines like “you spend more time in the friend zone than you did in the phantom zone,” on the drawing board.
This week’s episode provided yet another example of Kara trying and ultimately failing to balance it all. While out flying around the city, Kara discovers she is being followed by a mysterious drone. Kara assumes it belongs to the DEO, but they’re as surprised by it as she is. Especially after Kara saves the day from a bomb, that just so happens to be made from the same technology as the drone.
Henshaw and Alex pose as FBI agents to investigate their top suspect, Maxwell Lord. Meanwhile, Kara has her hands full babysitting Cat Grant’s adorable son, Carter, while Cat’s in Metropolis. But when Alex discovers a second bomb hidden at Lord Tech, Kara flies into action to get the bomb far from the city. Kara manages to throw the bomb over the ocean, but not before the blast knocks her out cold. The DEO fishes her out of the ocean, and it could be the concussion but did Kara just see Henshaw’s eyes glow? Maybe now they will finally explain this plotline.
After discovering the bomber is a spurned ex-employee of Maxwell, they urge him to cancel his Super Rail unveiling. Naturally, Maxwell refuses. As if Kara wasn’t spread thin enough already now there are two separate bombs she has to diffuse, one on the Super Rail and one at the airport. Oh, and did I mention Carter is on board the Super Rail? Babysitter of the year award right there.
Kara tells the DEO to handle the airport bomb while she takes out the Super Rail. As Kara tries to talk down the bomber she is confused by his reasoning, since he claims he’s doing all this for his daughter. Kara uses her heat vision to split the train, saving everyone on board. Meanwhile, Henshaw uses his secret powers to diffuse the airport bomb; but when Alex questions him on it he tells her the bomb was a dud.
While everyone is excited by their win today, Kara can’t stop thinking about what the bomber said. Kara realizes that Maxwell was behind the bombs the entire time, using the knowledge of his sick daughter to force the bombers hand. Kara goes to confront Maxwell and he admits he was doing it all to test her, and is intent on finding out who she really is. If you’re keeping track we now have Aunt Astra rounding up criminals, Henshaw’s eyes glowing red, and now Maxwell investigating Supergirl. Are they ever going to start a storyline and actually continue it or what? I guess I’ll just have to wait until next Monday to find out.
