Star Wars Painting Sells for Record $3.8M in Heritage Auction
Heritage has sold the Star Wars: A New Hope original 1977 half-sheet painting by Tom Jung for a record $3.875 million. The painting was offered in their Hollywood & Entertainment Signature Auction on December 9-10, 2025. The auction featured 600 lots of memorabilia, including items from The Wizard of Oz, Clint Eastwood’s Pale Rider gun, Elvis Presley’s Harley, and more, for a total $7.71 million.
Jung’s art was used for the style A movie poster, featuring Luke Skywalker dramatically raising a lightsaber, Princess Leia posing in front of him, with Darth Vader’s helmet looming in the background. It set a record for most valuable Star Wars collectible and piece of movie poster art sold at auction. It surpassed the sale of Darth Vader’s lightsaber, which sold for $3.6 million at Propstore, and Bob Peak’s Apocalypse Now art that Heritage sold for $687,500.

“This isn’t just a milestone for Star Wars. It’s a landmark moment for the entire field of pop culture collectibles and artwork,” Heritage’s Director of Consignments, Pop Culture & Historical Charles Epting said. “This painting defined the visual language of one of the most beloved films of all time, and its impact clearly still resonates with collectors at the highest level.”
Jung’s painting was joined by the screen-matched Ewok Village matte painting from Return of the Jedi that realized $162,500. Created by ILM matte artist Christopher Evans, the painting depicts the Ewoks’ treetop home on the forest moon of Endor.
The auction led down the yellow brick road for Margaret Hamilton’s screen-worn Wicked Witch of the West flying hat from The Wizard of Oz that hammered for $575,000. Designed by MGM’s costumer Adrian, the hat is one of the few surviving examples and features the original chinstrap that held it in place during the flying sequences.

Heritage offered multiple Wizard of Oz lots, including Judy Garland’s rehearsal slipper used to protect the Ruby Slippers, which went for $62,500. Garland’s original crème organdy shirt from the movie sold for $87,500, and a pair of Western Costume Company’s 50th Anniversary Commemorative Ruby Slippers brought $137,500.
Clint Eastwood’s Preacher hero Remington 1858 New Model Army revolver, rig, and spare cylinder from Pale Rider shot to $143,750. It was offered with its C.F. Stembridge holster that is signed by Eastwood.
Elvis Presley’s 1976 Harley-Davidson Bicentennial 1200 FLH Electra Glide drove to $125,000. Presley purchased the motorcycle in 1976, and it was sold with the original title signed by Presley.
