Stan Lee Guest of Honor at 2006 Toronto Comicon
Toronto Comicon in Toronto, Canada April 28 to 30, 2006.
“We are
extremely honored to welcome Stan Lee as our guest of honor”, says Peter Dixon,
Co-Promoter and owner of Paradise Comics, “Stan Lee is the single most
recognizable comic book creator in the history of the medium. We had Will Eisner
at our convention in 2004, and Jerry Robinson in 2005, we had to top ourselves
somehow and you can’t find a bigger comic book legend than the inimitable Stan
Lee.”
So far the 2006 guest list is sure to be one of the highlights of
next year’s convention season. Industry professionals like Ethan Van Sciver
(Green Lantern), Eric Powell (The Goon), Howard Chaykin (City
of Tomorrow), Darwyn Cooke (DC: The New Frontier), Tony Harris (Ex
Machina), Jimmy Palmiotti (Hawkman), Amanda Conner (JSA
Classified), Dave Sim (Cerebus), Brian Azzarello (100
Bullets), Jill Thompson (Dead Boy Detectives) and Francis Manapul
(Necromancer) have already signed on for the 3 day event, with more in
the works.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg”, said Kevin Boyd,
Co-Promoter of the Paradise Comicon, “we’ve got a huge and loyal creator
community here in Toronto that has been standing solidly behind our efforts and
we’ve got a lot of additional guests that we are still in talks with that we
will be announcing right up to the weekend of the event. Last spring we had
surprise guests like J. Michael Straczynski and Bill Sienkiewicz, so you never
know who might show up at our convention.”
Add to that mix a great
cross-section of Canadian and US comic book dealers with merchandise ranging
from Golden Age goodies to the latest variant covers, companies like CGC, who
will be in Toronto accepting submissions. Currently the Paradise Toronto
Convention is the only Canadian convention CGC currently attends. Add in
publishers like Top Cow and Speakeasy, great panels and workshops with industry
professionals and the 2nd Annual Joe Shuster Awards for Canadian
Comic Book Creator and you have the makings of one of the most unique comic book
shows of the year.
2006 will also see a marked improvement to the look
and environment of the show when it moves to the newer side (Hall C) of the
National Trade Centre, a sleek and modern convention facility near Toronto’s
lakeshore. Genre fans will note that the new building doubled (literally) as a
government facility at the end of the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse
starring Milla Jovovich.
