The next chapter in the Hunger Games takes fans back to when a young Haymitch Abernathy entered the games in Sunrise on the Reaping. Based on the book by Suzanne Collins, the film follows Haymitch as he attempts to survive the biggest Hunger Games yet.

The new trailer begins with the tributes encircling the cornucopia in a reminder that this is the first Quarter Quell with twice the number of tributes. A tense conversation between President Snow (Ralph Fiennes) and Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada) leads to flashes of District 12 where Haymitch spends time with his girlfriend, and is chosen for the games.

Viewers meet their chaperone Drusilla Sickle (Glenn Close), and the younger versions of Hunger Games characters like Caesar Flickerman (Kieran Culkin), Plutarch Heavensbee (Jesse Plemons), and Effie Trinket (Elle Fanning). The younger Beetee Latier (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) talks to Haymitch about stopping the games and Wiress (Maya Hawke) warns that the arena is a killing machine.

Violence breaks out during training sessions, and the tension amps up as a fire explodes behind Haymitch in the arena, a crash occurs in the chariot parade, and the tributes are sent up to the surface in the arena. It ends by circling back to the scene with President Snow and Haymitch in which the leader of Panem threatens a bloodbath if the boy from District 12 doesn’t obey him.

The movie is directed by Francis Lawrence, who directed all of the Hunger Games movies except for the first one. The script was written by Billy Ray (who wrote the Hunger Games script) and Michael Lesslie (writer of Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes script).

The ensemble cast also includes Mckenna Grace, Whitney Peak, Lili Taylor, Ben Wang, Percy Daggs IV, and Iona Bell, with appearances by Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Huterchson as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, respectively.

Sunrise on the Reaping is set for theatrical release on November 20, 2026.
