Silver Surfer #1 Page 1 Title Splash in ComicLink Auction
The 1968 release of Marvel’s Silver Surfer #1 is a key moment in comic book history, presenting the origin of the beloved character introduced in 1966’s Fantastic Four #48-50 for the very first time.
“We are thrilled to be bringing to our Winter Featured Auction, commencing in February, the epic Silver Surfer #1 page 1 title splash featuring ‘The Origin of the Silver Surfer!’, showcasing an extraordinary image of the gleaming Surfer soaring through space on his cosmic board depicted by the legendary art team of esteemed penciler John Buscema and inker extraordinaire Joe Sinnott. It is as impactful an image as it is significant. The dramatically lettered, monumental title of the storyline is all original and perfectly complements the magnificent illustration,” ComicLink founder and Managing Director Josh Nathanson said.
Silver Surfer #1 was written by Stan Lee, who collaborated with Buscema and Sinnott on this landmark issue. Heralded as “one of comicdom’s greatest creations,” the creators provided the important, long-awaited back story of the cosmic character who became a favorite after his introduction in two and a half years prior. The Silver Surfer remains one of Marvel’s most popular characters nearly 60 years after his introduction.

To build more anticipation for Silver Surfer’s first solo title, Marvel did something that had never done before. For the first time ever, the publisher began a new title devoted to a single character with a double-sized 64-page format priced at 25¢. That was more than double the standard 12¢ common in the era, but the demand was there. “The Origin of the Silver Surfer” led off the issue with a 38-page story. Readers learned that the Silver Surfer was once a normal man named Norrin Radd from the planet Zenn-La who had a great love in his life, Shalla-Bal. The book shows how Galactus came to destroy Zenn-La and how Norrin nobly sacrificed the life he knew to save his planet and his beloved. Readers also see how Galactus transformed Norrin into his first herald, to seek out new worlds for the god-like being to consume, and thereby satiate, his endless hunger.
“Silver Surfer #1 is one of the most desired and valuable comic books of the late Silver Age. It is so desirable that high grade examples of the comic book in CGC 9.8 have sold for six figures!” Nathanson said.
