Silhouette: Finding Power in the Shadows
Silhouette Chord is a mutant superhero with the power to manipulate the Darkforce. Creators Fabian Nicieza and Mark Bagley gave her the ability to turn herself into living shadow, fly, teleport, turn invisible, or become intangible.
Silhouette was introduced in The New Warriors #2 (August 1990) as the daughter of Miyami, a member of the Dragon’s Breath cult in Cambodia, and Andrew Chord, an American soldier. Since her mother was exposed to the Wellspring of Power, Silhouette gained power over the Darkforce.
Once they were grown up, Silhouette and her brother Aaron (aka Midnight’s Fire) became vigilantes in New York. While they were working with Night Thrasher, Silhouette was shot and paralyzed and Aaron turned away from being a hero to become a crime lord. Undeterred by her injury and her brother’s betrayal, Silhouette remained determined to be a hero.
She joined the New Warriors, using crutches to help with her mobility. During The Infinity Crusade, Silhouette was briefly brainwashed to serve the Goddess, but was freed by allies. She was part of Captain America’s Secret Avengers team who opposed the Superhuman Registration Act, though later she did become registered after the Civil War storyline. In another story, Silhouette was one of the Darkforce users who lost control of her powers and helped block the sun that led to a vampire invasion.
