Scarlett Johansson to Star in Ghost in the Shell
Following months of rumors, Scarlett Johansson has officially been cast as the lead in the live-acton adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, according to a report by Variety. The Ghost in the Shell franchise has been around since it started as a manga in 1989 and the live-action project has been worked on by DreamWorks since 2008.
Ghost in the Shell follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg and a member of the Public Security Section 9; the group is a special operations task force that executes counter-terrorism operations in the fiction Japanese city of Niihama. It is currently unknown if the American-made live-action adaptation of the story will retain the Japanese setting, or if it will get a similar treatment as Edge of Tomorrow, which was adapted from the Japanese light novel and manga All You Need is Kill.
Ghost in the Shell will be directed by Rupert Sanders, produced by Avi Arad and Steven Paul, with a script by Bill Wheeler. Mark Sourian will be an executive producer. There is currently no date set for the film’s release.
