Rosario Dawson has been cast in the lead role for the Ava Duvernay-led DMZ pilot on HBO Max. The show adapts the 72-issue Vertigo comic by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli which is set after the second American Civil War when Manhattan is turned into a demilitarized zone.

Dawson will play Alma Ortego, the medic who saves people while searching for her son. In doing so, she is confronted by gangs, militias, and warlords in the lawless territory.

Her previous comic-based work has included the Sin City movies and Marvel’s Netflix series, starting with Daredevil, then appearing in Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders. Dawson has also done voice work as Batgirl in The LEGO Batman Movie and Wonder Woman in Wonder Woman: Bloodlines.

DuVernay’s ARRAY Filmsworks is producing the project with Warner Bros. Television and she will executive produce alongside showrunner and writer Roberto Patino. She is also directing and co-writing a New Gods movie.

Though DMZ does not have a release date yet, production is expected to begin in 2020.
