Robert Kirkman Announces Return of Capes Series
During his panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Kirkman revealed that Capes, the out of print Invincible universe series, is back. The Skybound and Image Comics title that he co-created with Mark Englert (Hack/Slash) will return in November 2025.
This will be the first time the book is reprinted since it was released over 20 years ago. Described as a “special remastering,” it features new art and dialogue from the original creative team.
In addition to the reproduction of the original series, Kirkman also shared that new Capes stories are also on the way. The series will be written by Benito Cereno and illustrated by Englert with new content starting in Capes #7 in 2026.
“With so much excitement surrounding all things Invincible-related, I knew we had to get Capes back in print!” Kirkman said at the panel. “Revisiting the original issues was so much fun, we knew we couldn’t stop there. I love these characters and it was a thrill to get to introduce the world to Bolt, Kid Thor, and Knockout in Invincible season three. If the world wants more Capes how can we not give it to them?”
The book is set at Capes, Inc., a company that employs superheroes like Bolt, Kid Thor, Knockout, Captain Cosmic, and Claire Voyant. They protect New York City from threats like Machine Head and Titan, but will soon face an enemy they never expected.
“When Robert contacted me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to recolor Capes, I was super excited,” Englert said. “I wasn’t expecting going over the old pages to feel so therapeutic, almost mentoring my younger self to bring the art up to par with rest of the amazing books in the Skybound library. When we made the decision to go all in, really remaster the art beyond the colors, adding backgrounds, fixing up faces or figures, my passion for drawing sequential pages was rekindled and I wanted to keep going. Creating brand new Capes stories with Robert and Benito has been a dream come true!”
Capes #1 will come with covers by Invincible series artists Ryan Ottley (main cover) and Cory Walker (1:10 incentive variant). Covers also include an open to order cover by Englert, a 1:25 incentive variant by Jahnoy Lindsay, a 1:50 incentive black and white variant by Ottley, and a blank sketch cover.
The first issue arrives in comic shops on November 19, 2025.
