The chainmail bikini-clad She-Devil with a Sword is finally back on screen. Samuel Goldwyn Films released the first trailer for Red Sonja, based on the sword and sorcery comic of the same name.

“Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival. Red Sonja must battle her way through the blood-soaked pits of a tyrant’s empire and rally an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his ruthless bride, Dark Annisia,” per the official synopsis.

The trailer introduces Revenge star Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja, the warrior who will come up against a host of combatants from humans to monstrous creatures. The tagline, “Witness the rise of a legend” appears as Sonja promises to take a stand against the evil forces. It ends with a comical bit as she responds with skepticism when an armorer offers her the famous chainmail bikini.

Red Sonja was created by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith with some inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonya of Rogatino. She starred in Marvel comics from 1973 to 1986, then Dynamite Entertainment began publishing Red Sonja comics in 2005. She slashed her way to the screen in 1985’s Red Sonja, starring Brigitte Nielsen. Several attempts have been made to produce another Red Sonja movie, but those projects were continually shelved.

The movie is directed by M.J. Bassett (Ash vs. Evil Dead) and was written by Tasha Huo (Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft). It also stars Robert Sheehan, Wallis Day, Rhona Mitra, Martyn Ford, Trevor Eve, Veronica Ferres, and Michael Bisping, and Phillip Winchester.

Red Sonja will be in theaters on August 15, 2025.
