One of the most beloved children’s books of all time is Frank L. Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Published in 1900, the book has been reprinted in countless editions in the one hundred plus years since its initial printing. The unparalleled success of the book prompted Baum to continue the Oz adventures in an additional thirteen books, and his successors created many more stories.

The book series was popular on its own before endearing itself with fans the world over with the 1939 film adaptation.

One version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz of note was the Waddle Book edition, which was published by Blue Ribbon Books under authorization by Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1934, five years prior to the release of MGM’s film. This edition reprinted Baum’s story and that was illustrated by W.W. Denslow. In the back of the book was an additional three pages of illustrated instructions for assembly of six die-cut cardboard character figures of Dorothy, Toto, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion and The Wizard of Oz. Also included was cardboard ramp that replicated the famed Yellow Brick Road.

In Hake’s Americana & Collectibles’ current auction, which closes next Thursday, September 10, 2009, a rare complete example of this highly desirable edition is up for bid.

This book is rarely found complete with its dust jacket, envelope and Waddle figures and is considered among the most desirable Wizard of Oz collectibles. For more information and to actually see the book, click here.

As a special note for Oz enthusiasts, Yellow Bricks & Emerald Cities, one of the current special exhibits at Geppi’s Entertainment Museum, celebrates the legacy of Baum’s work and its incredible impact on generations of children through a special exhibition that showcases first editions of the first 40 Oz books on loan to the museum from local collector Fred Trust as well as other memorabilia.
