Rare Pulps, Classic Covers, Key Issues in Heritage Auction
Heritage is hosting a Pulp Magazines Signature Auction with selections from the Dr. Richard Meli collection alongside examples from more than 20 other consigners. A variety of pulps and related magazines will be offered on June 5-6, 2026, including rare books, high grade examples, and some midgrade pulps to fit more collectors’ budgets.
“This sale has a really wide variety of lots, a good variety of genres, title, artists and authors,” Heritage Comics & Comic Art Consignment Director Sasha Fraze said. “It runs the gamut of every kind of cool pulp you could want – classic covers, important stories, ultra-rare pulps. Overall, there are tons of cool books that should go for the $2,000 to $5,000 range. It’s a great sale for someone who wants to enter pulp collecting.”

One of the big highlights is Weird Tales #1 CGC 5.0 rare color variant, which is considered one of the three most sought after pulps. The majority of copies of the book are from what is called the “first state” edition with black and orange tones reversed on the front cover. This copy is from the small “second state” with the colors corrected.
Doc Savage #1 CGC 4.5 is another major pulp key that comes from the Meli collection. This copy of the iconic pulp hero’s first appearance is one of three at this grade with only two listed higher.
“He really represents the first superhero, and this was the second big hero pulp following The Shadow,” Fraze said. “An unrestored 4.5 is an impressive copy of a very desirable book, a pulp key that often shows up as trimmed or a later Canadian edition, so to have an unrestored Doc Savage 1 is really exciting.”

A rare All-Story #94 CGC 2.0 UK price variant contains the introduction of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ popular and influential hero Tarzan of the Apes. The UK version is the same as the US, except that it has a sixpence price on the cover. Bookery’s Guide to Pulps and Related Magazines noted that there are likely less than 20 copies of the US version and even fewer of the UK price variant.
Top lots continue with All Detective Magazine #12 CGC 5.0 with Norman Saunders’ first pulp cover, Ace Mystery #1 CGC 8.5 iconic horror pulp, Movie Humor Vol. 4 #2 CGC 9.8 (highest graded issue), and Weird Tales #173 CGC 8.5 with a Margaret Brundage cover.
