Puerto Rican Comic Creators Celebrated in NY Public Library Exhibit
The New York Public Library is hosting an exhibit of comic art created by Puerto Rican artists. The ¡Wepa! Puerto Ricans in the World of Comics exhibit “…explores aspects of Puerto Rican life and culture along the axes of space (representations of ‘the Island’ itself; Puerto Rican relationships with New York City) and time (Puerto Rico’s complex past; Puerto Rican visions of futuristic and fantasy worlds),” per the exhibit description.
Manual Martinez Nazario, a librarian in San Juan, Puerto Rico, began collecting art in the 1990s that showcased the talent and perspective of Puerto Rican artists. In 2022, he donated his collection of art made in Puerto Rico and the US to The New York Public Library. The exhibit consists mostly of pieces from Nazario’s collection.
Artists John Vasquez Mejías, Stephaney Moyano Ayala, Carla Rodríguez, Rosa Colón Guerra, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, Ivan Velez Jr., Alice Vanessa Falto Ayala, Omar Banuchi, Rangely “Rangy” García Colón, Ramos Sepulveda, and Eliana Falcón-Dvorsky are featured in the exhibit.
It was curated by Paloma Celis Carbajal (Curator for Latin American, Iberian, and US Latino Collections) and Charles Cuykendall Carter (Assistant Curator in the Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle), and was organized by The New York Public Library.
¡Wepa! Puerto Ricans in the World of Comics is located in the Wachenheim Gallery in the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. It’s open through March 8, 2026.
The New York Public Library – Stephen A. Schwarzman Building is located at 476 5th Avenue in New York, New York.
