A highlight of the current Geppi’s Entertainment’s Hake’s Americana auction includes a vast collection of original production drawings from Disney and Silly Symphonies. Pencil drawings were created to use as guides when making production cels or the final painted images actually photographed for use in creating an animated feature. Like production cels, hundreds of production drawings were done for each project, though a fraction of those produced are ever actually seen in the collectibles market. Bid now, as Hake’s Americana Auction #195 starts closing September 2-4, 2008!

To start, Mickey Mouse is featured in Mickey’s Mellerdrammer production drawing sequence. The sequence includes nine 9.5 X 12” animation sheets depicting Mickey as Uncle Tom lighting a firecracker and then placing it in his mouth, only to see it blow up in his face. Mickey Mouse is also featured in lot #1947 as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice from the 1940 musical feature Fantasia.

Another noted production drawing lot is by the famous duck artist Carl Barks and features Donald Duck, entitled Alpine Climbers. Drawing #37, from a 1936 Mickey Mouse cartoon, the drawing highlights Donald Duck in his classic fighting stance and mother eagle with rope about talons.

Snow White, another favorite Disney character, has also made an appearance in two production drawings, which also feature the Witch. Lot #1638 depicts Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs featuring the Witch on a 10 X 12” sheet of animation paper, with drawing #443 displaying the evil witch holding a basket of apples in one hand and handling an apple to Snow White. The second production drawing, measuring 9 X 12”, includes drawing #1227B, depicting the evil witch in a menacing pose

Lastly, a Hake’s Americana auction would not be complete without Silly Symphonies production drawings. The Silly Symphonies’ Water Babies appear in two of the production drawings being offered. The first Water Babies production drawing, lot #1625, is drawing #4 presenting three Water Babies riding leaping fish while standing in a pyramid formation. The second, is drawing #48 featuring a Water Baby being thrown from a bucking frog wearing a leaf saddle.

Also from Silly Symphonies are Mother Goose Goes to Hollywood production drawings featuring celebrities as characters. On a 10 X 12” sheet of animation paper Cab Calloway is depicted as Hi-De-Ho Man and it includes Calloway’s six member band. Drawing #D7 features Katharine Hepburn as Little Bo Peep who is calling for her sheep from 1938. Lastly, lot #1642 features character actor and comedian Hugh Herbert as Old King Cole.

These production drawings are just the beginning of what is being offered by Geppi’s Entertainment’s Hake’s Americana. To discover more production drawings and other collectibles please visit www.hakes.com!
