In November 2017, the Pokémon video game franchise passed a huge milestone – selling more than 300 million units worldwide. That number includes all Pokémon video games (including all spinoff titles) released since February 1996, when the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green versions first arrived in Japan on the Game Boy.

Pokémon still has a ways to go to catch up to the top-selling video game franchise of all time: another Nintendo staple, Super Mario. Including all of the spinoff titles for Super Mario (such as the sports and party games), the series has sold more than 529 million games worldwide. Though, as the Mario franchise has a decade’s worth of a head-start on Pokémon, there’s no telling where these series will go.

The most recent Pokémon games, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, released for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems on November 17, 2017; you can find our review of the games right here on Scoop. Nintendo has announced that a “core” Pokémon game is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch, though no details have been released about that title.
