Pedigree’s High Grade Tower Lakes Auction Open
Pedigree Comics CEO and President Doug Schmell recently received a consignment of the remaining high grade Tower Lakes Collection of approximately 450 CGC-certified comics and magazines. They are live now in Pedigree’s Grand Auction.
The auction began on Sunday, February 27, 2022, and lasts for ten days until Wednesday, March 9 as a separate event on the Pedigree Comics website. The first lot (Amazing Spider-Man #16 9.4) ends at 8:25 PM and the last lot (Zulu #1 9.8 File Copy) ends at 11:30 PM. There is no buyer’s premium on any of the lots in the auction and every book will be listed with no reserve. Every book is CGC-graded and the minimum bid is $20 for this auction.
The Tower Lakes Collection comes out of the suburbs of Chicago and contains a group of award-winning CGC Registry Sets, including what was the No. 2 Daredevil complete registry set, the No. 3 Daredevil #1-80 registry set, the No. 3 Daredevil #1-157 registry set, and the No. 3 Daredevil #1-310. It also has the No. 1 Gold Key registry set (held for over 11 years) and the No. 1 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles registry set (held for over 3 years). The TMNT set is among the highest graded and most complete CGC-graded collection. In fact, the consignor owned all six prints of the coveted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 graded 9.8.
Besides the Registry Set books, the collection contains 9.4 and higher graded copies of Amazing Spider-Man #16, #18, and #129, Fantastic Four #39 and #40, Giant-Size X-Men #1, Incredible Hulk #180-182, Iron Fist #14, Iron Man #55, Tales of Suspense #52 and #57, and X-Men #94 9.4, plus many high grade Dell comics.
The consignor was introduced to comics via his brother when he was in third grade through titles like Groo, Archie, Batman, G.I. Joe, and Avengers. Through borrowing his brother’s books and getting new ones, he became a fan of characters like Groo, Snake Eyes, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
“I guess my affinity for samurai swords never left me, nor did my love for TMNT. Because upon joining the CGC Boards in 2008, I began to meet some extremely friendly Turtle aficionados from the TMNT forums,” the consignor said. “They helped spark my childhood nostalgia for the ‘Green Guys.’ Through the friendships made with these gentlemen, over the next decade plus, my piecemeal collection began to grow and grow through the years.”
After the 2012 TMNT cartoon series began, his collection became a family hobby with his wife and sons. After he acquired all six prints of the first issue graded 9.8, he realized the plausibility of completing a TMNT Registry Set in that grade. The consignor similarly sought to build a Near Mint Daredevil collection and nearly every issue is in a second generation CGC holder.
