Peaceful Remission Explores a Long Relationship Set in Space
An elderly couple living in space endure the trials of a long relationship and solitude of their home away from Earth in Peaceful Remission. The graphic novel is written and drawn by animator, storyboard artist, and director Jonathan Djob Nkondo. It is being published by Oni Press and Magnetic Press, with a scheduled release date of September 2026.
“Set in a satellite asteroid home orbiting Earth, Peaceful Remission follows elderly couple Marlène and Jerry Nomo, whose quiet life is disrupted by a mysterious nighttime rumble. But the real tension lies not in the noise but in Marlène’s simmering frustration with Jerry’s passivity. The incident becomes a catalyst for emotional confrontation, revealing the cracks in their long-standing relationship. When Jerry’s obsession with a recent discovery leaves Marlene responsible for his health and well-being, their seemingly ordinary tasks – shopping, driving, caregiving – are refracted through a surreal, futuristic lens, emphasizing the emotional weight of routine and the quiet heroism of unspoken love,” per the description from Oni and Magnetic Press.

Nkondo is known for his work on Scavengers Reign, League of Legends, and Love, Death & Robots animated series, and for the Gorillaz’s recent animated short film, The Mountain, the Moon Cave, and the Sad God.
Peaceful Remission is a “surreal, contemplative work” that is “told through clean, futuristic interiors contrasted with intimate character framing,” according to the description. Nkondo produces segments of dialogue and pages focused on observation while using the sterility and solitude of space to illustrate the emotional distance between Marlene and Jerry.
“Jonathan Djob Nkondo’s work as an animator, storyboard artist, and director has earned him a broad community of fans and respect around the world, and these personal graphic novels highlight his keen eye for world-building and pacing,” Magnetic’s Director of Publishing Mike Kennedy said. “Peaceful Remission is a heartfelt and haunting look at what the future might have in store and the timeless joys and struggles of relationships.”
Peaceful Remission was introduced on Kickstarter and was backed by over 3,000 contributors. The graphic novel will be in stores on September 16.
