In the upcoming Auction #213, Hake’s Americana & Collectibles will be offering the incredible piece of art “Soleil De Mediterranee” by Pablo Picasso. A true Renaissance man, the world-renowned Spanish painter was also a sculptor, print-maker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright. As one of the most influential artists of the 20th Century he is credited with co-founding the Cubist movement as well as the invention of constructed sculpture, the co-inventor of collage, as well as a wide variety of artistic styles.

“While we have offered some of the most amazing comic and animation art over our 47-year history, fine and modern art has been limited to only a handful of pieces over the years,” Hake’s President Alex Winter said. “We break away from that this auction by being able to offer an amazing, one of a kind piece of artwork by one of the most important names in the art world.”

The original wax pastel art was matted to 8” by 8.25” and comes with an ornate 23” by 24” gold-painted heavy wooden frame. The subtitle “La Californie” is in black ink in Picasso’s handwriting and is dated “Aug. 7, 1956 Cannes A.M.” The piece bears the French inscription “My Dear Friend – My Telephone Here – 901-82” and below the art Picasso added the inscription and signature that reads “My Best To You – Picasso” (translated from French).

The art depicts the shining sun of the French Riviera in the center with rays flowing from the central image with colorful accent designs representing the Mediterranean Sea. The art has a vertical crease at the center with some light handing wear and displays very fine to excellent.

The art includes original paperwork folder from French art auction house Artcurial noting a 2008 sale date. Picasso’s “Soleil De Mediterranee” is currently open for bidding, starting at $20,000. Bidding on the painting will close on November 13, 2014 at 12 PM EST. It is expected to reach $35,000 to $50,000.

“Hake’s has always been about expanding what we offer as our clientele is so diverse,” Winter added. “Hopefully this is just the first of many such works of art to come our way in future auctions.”
