Opening This Weekend

is Tarantino’s Kill Bill, Volume 1, there are actually other movies
opening this weekend. Can you believe it?!?!?
Let’s first discuss the
obvious filmgoers’ choice. Who can resist the bevy of blonde and brunette
Samurai sword-wielding femme fatales, bent on bludgeoning each other at all
costs (and well, killing Bill, too) Tarantino enlisted for his originally uncut
three-hour blood and gore extravaganza? The buzz has been extensive (the film
has already been hailed as the most violent produced in American cinema), and
Uma Thurman has been especially praised for her part as the spurned and
left-for-dead, vengeance-seeking Bride. If you’re into flicks that send the
envelope soaring, you’ll most likely find your way into an overstuffed theatre,
surrounded by kung-fu geeks and Tarantino lighter-wavers. Have a
blast!
In stark contrast, Clint Eastwood offers a much more morose
alternative with his newest directorial venture, Mystic River. The film
is a character and community study on the effects of childhood trauma, parental
grief, marital distrust and revenge. An all-star cast, including Sean Penn,
Kevin Bacon, Marcia Gay Harden, Tim Robbins, Laura Linney and Laurence
Fishburne, delivers restrained, somber and powerful performances.
On a
lighter note this weekend, the Coen Brothers are widely releasing their newest
venture, the Brian Grazer-produced Intolerable Cruelty, starring
Catherine Zeta-Jones and George Clooney. Zeta-Jones is a “social-marrier” who
trades in one tycoon for another in the comedy, while Clooney stars as a divorce
attorney at the apex of his game (who represented Zeta-Jones’s first ex and left
her with a settlement of… nothing). The two face off while hilarity–and
romance–ensue. Though this weekend’s competition is pretty stiff, we imagine
this feature will be saved from the box office skids by the Coen-Grazer
association alone.

horror/sci-fi posters included, this section also includes many other posters as

about his attractive ”no reserve” policy, Hershenson asserted, ”I can’t speak
