In Far From Heaven,
two-time Oscar-nominee Julianne Moore stars as a privileged wife of a blissful,
idyllic 1950’s suburbia. Things become slightly less idyllic, however, when she
catches her husband with another man. In her grief, she befriends the family’s
African-American gardener, and the neighbors have even more reason to
talk…
Can we say typecasting? 8 Mile takes one week in the life
of white Detroit rapper B. Rabbit Smith, played by Eminem. It examines him in
terms of where he is (living in a trailer park with mom, baby sister and mom’s
abusive boyfriend) and how he finds his outlet to cope (writing and performing
rap songs). Kim Basinger also stars, and Curtis Hanson (L.A. Confidential
and Wonder Boys) directs.
If you’d rather a more classically
trained actor than Eminem, check out Rebecca Romijn Stamos in Femme
Fatale! Rebecca stars as a manipulative, seductive bombshell who re-invents
herself after a jewel heist – only to be caught by Antonio Banderas’ former
paparazzo. Twist, turns, and seedy doin’s ensue.
In The Rising
Place, time flip-flops between the 1940s and the present as a young girl
(Frances Fisher) begins studying her Aunt Millie’s interesting past while
visiting her in the Mississippi Delta. Racial tensions, unwanted pregnancies,
tragedy and love all figure in.
Hush! is a Japanese film about a
gay man who, when asked to help a female friend conceive a child, is confronted
with all sorts of troubles stemming from both his jealous lover and his own
image of himself.
