Nintendo Direct: New Hardware, Software for 2015
Nintendo held their online “Nintendo Direct” event in the morning of January 14, 2015, in which they announced many upcoming games and finalized details for existing announcements for the spring release schedule. Titles for both the 3DS handheld and the Wii U console were announced.
One of the biggest announcements was that a new Fire Emblem title is in development for the Nintendo 3DS system. Though the series was once floundering, after the 2013 release of Fire Emblem: Awakening, it’s as popular as it ever was. The new game in the franchise, which is as of yet untitled, is developed by the same team that put together Awakening, though it will feature a new story by Shin Kibayashi; Kibayashi is a long-time manga writer and screenwriter who has won awards for his work with Kodansha. No official release date was given for the new Fire Emblem.
Also announced for the 3DS was the arrival of a popular puzzle game from Japan to the west – Puzzle and Dragons. This game is seeing a western release for the first time and will include Puzzle and Dragons Z and Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Edition in a combo pack when it releases in May of 2015.
Pokémon Shuffle was also announced. This is another puzzle game that incorporates the creatures of the Pokémon franchise in a match-three-style puzzle game. It’s available in the Nintendo eShop for free.
The eShop was a big focus of this Nintendo Direct, with the most significant news being for the Wii U. The Wii U console has been “backwards compatible” since its launch – meaning that it can play Wii games – but only after the user puts the system into “Wii Mode.” This will no longer be necessary, as a downloadable update to the system will allow Wii games to be played natively without “Wii Mode.” Because of this, Wii titles are going to be made available in the eShop to download: Super Mario Galaxy 2 was available immediately after the presentation wrapped, Punch-Out!!! will be available starting on January 22, and Metroid Prime Trilogy will be available on January 29. These titles will also be available for half-price for one week after their release date, and more titles will be announced in the future for eShop release.
The other big eShop title discussed was Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Tipping Stars, which will be available for download on both the Wii U and 3DS starting on March 5. This puzzle game pits the longtime rivals against each other once again, and the game also features an extensive level creation mode. Players can share levels online for others to download and try for themselves. The most significant thing about this game is that players who buy the Wii U version will get the 3DS version for free, and vice versa.
Other eShop titles announced included Blek, Citizens of Earth, Gunman Clive 2, and Moon Chronicles, among many other independently-developed games.
Nintendo’s Amiibo line of figures was also a topic of discussion, with new games announced as having functionality with the figures. Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, which will be available on February 20, will use some of the figures to give Kirby extra powers, and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker will also incorporate Amiibo.
The next wave of Amiibo figures will launch in February, and a new wave for spring was also announced. The figures to launch in spring include Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Wario, Ness, and Charizard. A new line of Amiibo was also announced – the Super Mario series, which includes Mario, Peach, Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi, and Toad. The Super Mario series launches on March 20 alongside Mario Party 10 for the Wii U, which will use this line of figures in a special game mode.
Other Wii U titles mentioned were Splatoon, the action shooting game that features the “Inkling” characters who can turn into squids, and Xenoblade Chronicles X. The former received a release date of May 2015, while the latter showed off cinematic scenes and confirmed that it will release later in the year.
On the 3DS side, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D received a release date of February 13, 2015 – and as part of the celebration of this release, Hyrule Warriors on the Wii U will get a Majora-themed downloadable content pack. The “Majora’s Mask Pack” contains two new playable characters, Tingle and young Link, plus extra costumes for existing characters.
The biggest announcement of the day, though, was the news that the New Nintendo 3DS handheld will launch in the United States on February 13, 2015. The new system features an extra pad called the “C-Stick,” extended battery life, and compatibility with the Amiibo figures. It will also switch to Micro SD cards for storage and will retail for $199.99.
In terms of the added capabilities of this new handheld, several games will use them either at the system’s launch or shortly after. Codename: STEAM will be one of the first 3DS games to use Amiibo; specifically, it will use Fire Emblem characters Marth, Ike, Robin, and Lucina as playable characters in the game if the player loads them into the game via the Amiibo. Codename: STEAM launches on March 13.
Xenoblade Chronicles will also be taking advantage of the New 3DS hardware by using the C-Stick as a mandatory button. This game was originally released on the Wii; Monster Games is in charge of the 3DS port, as Monolith Soft is working on the Wii U sequel.
Two special edition New 3DS systems were announced: a bundle with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, which will be available exclusively at GameStop, and a special gold edition for Majora’s Mask that features the titular mask on the system.
The entire Nintendo Direct event, which ran about 45 minutes long, can be viewed online on Nintendo’s website.
