New York Comic Con to Require Face Masks
For the second year in a row New York Comic Con (NYCC) is requiring that all attendees wear face coverings. The convention, which attracts 150,000 attendees, is running on October 6-9, 2022, at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
NYCC is requiring the use of high quality masks such as the N95, KN95, and KN94. Masks that aren’t permitted include ones with exhalation valves, bandanas, neck gaitors, masks with mesh material, masks with any holes or damage, and costume masks. Face coverings must fit snuggly over the mouth and nose and secure under the chin.
“This decision isn’t one we take lightly or without much discussion about the best course of action. At the end of the day, New York Comic Con is the largest pop culture convention in the United States. More fans, creators, and folks from across the industry come through, sporting events, and festivals. We feel this is the best way to ensure all of you have a safe and healthy time geeking out with us over the best four-day weekend of the year,” ReedPop Vice President of Events Kristina Rogers posted on Twitter.
Cosplayers are also required to wear approved face masks and they will need to remove cosplay helmets or masks at the con’s entrance.
Attendees are permitted to remove their masks during celebrity photo ops, though they must wear them in line and immediately after leaving the photo op area. NYCC is not using plexiglass for photos unless the celebrity guest asks that one be used.
Additional information on health and safety guidelines and measures were recently updated on NYCC’s website on September 7.
