New World Record Set for Mario Bros.
It took him six hours, but by the end of the day, Steven Kleisath had destroyed the world record for Nintendo’s 1983 arcade title, Mario Bros. In that time, he earned 5,424,920 points in the game, beating the previous world record high score of 4,678,440 points.
Kleisath officially submitted his score to Twin Galaxies via a video recording of his game-play on their forums. Twin Galaxies was established as the record keeper of video game high scores after Walter Day started the “Twin Galaxies National Scoreboard” in 1982.
The original Mario Bros. game was released in arcades in 1983; it features the duo of plumbers, Mario and Luigi, as they defeat creatures who have been coming out of the pipes in New York City. The game was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Commodore 64, as well as multiple Atari consoles in the 1980s, and has since appeared as a mini-game in other Nintendo titles such as Super Mario Advance and Animal Crossing.
