Mr. Peanut Stands Tall in Next Morphy Auction
Share:
Auction. Whether it is an icon like Mr. Peanut or advertising from a turn of the
century brewery, Dan Morphy always manages to find some of the most attractive
and interesting items for collectors.
This current auction, with bidding
scheduled to begin on March 31 and end April 2, features an entire category
devoted to peanuts. Yes, that is right peanuts. Among the many peanut-related
items offered are early, name-brand peanut butter tins and pails from such
companies as Teddy Bear, Toyland and a very early Peter Pan. There are a
couple of beautiful Squirrel Brand cans of the nuts themselves.
However,
nothing in peanut advertising stands out like Planters good old Mr. Peanut.
Famous for his monocle, top hat and cane, he first appeared in 1916. Planters
offered a prize to the person who offered the best sketch possible for use as a
trademark. The winner was a 14-year-old boy from Virginia. A commercial artist
added the extras a little later. He achieved an even greater degree of fame in
1942 when his image appeared over Times Square on a giant billboard. A veteran
of hundreds of television ads, he has also appeared in the Macy’s Thanksgiving
Day Parade riding in the Planter’s Nut Mobile.
In short, he is a true
icon. Just like Mr. Monopoly, the Kool-Aid pitcher and Ronald McDonald, he is
the spokesman that transcends generational identity. Morphy is offering some of
the most valued collectibles associated with this advertising legend.
