Movie advertising memorabilia from early horror greats, sci-fi classics, and beloved dramas are ready to adorn new collections through Hake’s Auction #229. The premier auction, which closes soon on March 11-12, 2020, contains a selection of movie posters that includes one-sheets, larger sizes, and glass slides.
The London After Midnight glass movie slide is from the original 1927 release of the silent horror/mystery film. The slide depicts a large image of Lon Chaney peeking around the title card on the left and an image of Chaney in his Man in the Beaver Hat make-up on the lower right. The 3-1/4” x 4” cardboard mount is stamped with the title and marked “Excelsior Illustrating Co.” of New York, NY.
The Frankenstein glass movie slide for the Universal classic directed by James Whale and starring Boris Karloff comes from the original 1931 release. It features an image of Frankenstein’s Monster lunging toward the rest of the cast, which was also used on the half-sheet and title card. This slide is also in cardboard mount stamped with the title and Excelsior Illustrating Co. mark.
The Son of the Sheik glass movie slide for the 1926 film has taped edges as issued and has the Excelsior mark. Rudolph Valentino, who starred in the silent adventure/drama film, appears on the slide as the character Ahmed.
The Citizen Kane glass movie slide is in a cardboard mount stamped with the title and intact back cardboard panel, plus Excelsior mark. This original release glass slide was made for the 1941 film that is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time. The title slide features a large image of Orson Welles, who directed, produced, co-wrote, and starred in the movie.
The Attack of the 50 Ft. Woman linen-mounted one-sheet advertises the 1958 science fiction classic directed by Nathan H. Juran (credited as Nathan Hertz) and starring Allison Hayes as the titular character. Hayes towers over a highway with a car in her hand while other vehicles and drivers veer away from her reaching grasp. This is one of the most highly sought posters from the wave of sci-fi movies released in the 1950s.
One of Universal’s later monster creations towers on the Revenge of the Creature linen-mounted six-sheet. Measuring 79” x 80-1/4”, this example comes from the original release of the 1955 sequel to Creature from the Black Lagoon, starring John Agar and Lori Nelson. The graphic shows the Creature holding a frightened woman as the terrified crowd flees around them.
Things continue looking scary on the Invasion of the Saucer-Men linen-mounted one-sheet. This original 1957 release poster design was created by Albert Kallis, showing two of the large-headed, menacing aliens holding a captive woman with flying saucers shining rays in the background.
Additional movie posters and slides in the auction include a rare King Kong window sign, Flying G-Men linen-mounted movie serial one-sheet, The Brain Eaters insert, Mad Love window card, and Star Wars style A one-sheet (second printing). The entire auction of historical and pop culture memorabilia is open for bids now through March 11-12 at hakes.com.
