Mister Sinister
Over the years the X-Men have battled countless bad guys, from The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to the infamous Magneto. But in the late ’80s a new villain emerged that would leave a lasting scar on the heroic mutants. Do you know who this sinister supervillain is?
Created by Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri, Mister Sinister made his debut in Uncanny X-Men #221 in September 1987. Initially, Mister Sinister plays a vital role in the Inferno crossover. It’s revealed that Sinister cloned Madelyne Pryor from Jean Grey in order for her to conceive a child with Cyclops. Apparently, Sinister had been manipulating Cyclops’ life from the time he was a young boy. After an intense battle with the X-Men and X-Factor, Sinister appeared to be destroyed by Cyclops’ optic beam. This is the comic world though, where no one is ever dead for very long.
Mister Sinister later returned in X-Factor, however it wasn’t until 1996 that his origin story was finally revealed. In the limited series, The Further Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix, Sinister was established as Nathaniel Essex, a scientist from the 19th century obsessed with evolution. After making a pact with the ancient mutant Apocalypse, Sinister became a virtually immortal being. This series also revealed that Sinister created Cyclops’ son Nathan in an effort to destroy Apocalypse.
In addition to virtual immunity to injury, Mister Sinister also possesses master manipulation, superhuman strength and durability, genius-level intellect, regenerative healing factor, telepathy, molecular manipulation, shapeshifting, energy projection via telekinesis, teleportation via tesseract headquarters, and prolonged longevity. Not exactly the powerhouse you want coming after you or your family. Sorry Cyclops.
Cyclops isn’t the only X-Men member who needs to watch out for this terrifying villain. It seems Wolverine will be facing Mister Sinister in the upcoming movie, Wolverine 3, scheduled for release on March 3, 2017.
